African Sisters Healthy Foods

January 21, 2010

Project OKURASE is happy to announce that AFRICAN SISTERS HEALTHY FOODS has been launched. Over the last two weeks Madame Abiba and her daughter Sonna from Guinea Conakry have been in Okurase Village training 6 Okurase and 5 Tamale women in making healthy foods. The women have formed a cooperative and will produce dried mango, papaya, and pineapple; homemade mango papaya and pineapple jams; dried ginger; dried moringa; a mixture of African spices, and baby food. We have started our initial packaging and labeling and look forward to seeing our product on the market shelves soon. We would be grateful to any leads you might have towards helping the women place their product outside Ghana, or in Ghana for that matter. The earnings from the Okurase food sales will support the women and a percent will go to build the school and Nkabom Centre for Skills Training and Formal Education. Importantly, this time together set in place relationships between two groups of women in different regions of Ghana who are now joined way forward. Congratulations to Esther, Rose, Adamah, Veronique, Beatrice, Nana, Abu, Theresa, Rabi, Adamu, and Gladys.

We are also very very grateful to Dr. Dominique Chadwick and Patrick Chadwick, filmmakers from Cambridge, England who provided their own funds to come to Okurase for the 10 days and film the training and follow the women. They also cleaned, cooked, fought off army ants, and helped build two structures. Medaase Dom and Patrick.

A very special thanks to USA for Africa for funding the women’s cooperative fruit drying project. Without you it would not be. Medaase!
